書譜 Essay on Calligraphy

【摘要】
《書譜》從書法藝術的基本原理研究出發,深刻地揭示了書法的本質特徵,即書法藝術與人的內在心靈的關係。提出書法藝術具有表達性情功能的觀點。他認為書法藝術的本質是「書之為妙,近取諸身。象八音之迭起,感會無方。」從人們日常生活相近的事物中,取得各種形象。像音樂的高低起伏,可以感受到其中的美好之處,是沒一定的方向。這也就是說,書法作品寫成之後,到處流傳,只要去欣賞,人們都可以感受到每幅作品的精神及美好之處。他提出書法藝術的功能主要是「功定禮樂,妙擬神仙。」「達其情性,形其哀樂」也就是書法的功能有如制定禮樂,可以表達人的感情與個性,把人們心中的喜怒哀樂之情透過書法作品表達出來。

孫過庭《書譜》代表唐代書法審美視覺,體現出唐代書法品評的最高格調,以及唐代書法品評的審美變化與趨向。同時對晚唐的藝術思想的形成和藝術理論的成熟,具有重要的作用和意義。

Sun Kuoting’s “Essay on Calligraphy” represents the visual evaluation on the calligraphy art in Tang Dynasty. It presents the highest taste on calligraphy evaluation as well as the change and trend of calligraphy appreciation. The article holds significant function and meaning on the formation of art ideals and the maturity of art theory in the late Tang period. It is based on the fundamental principles of calligraphy and deeply brings out the characteristics of calligraphy which lies in the connection between calligraphy art and the inner thoughts of human being. He thought calligraphy art existed in daily lives, just like the flow of musical tune, it does not have a fixed direction and one is capable to sense its beauty. Once a piece of calligraphy work is completed, it will wander around as long as we appreciate the work and everyone is able to understand the spirit and beauty of each piece of calligraphy work.
