在北宋，因為造紙技術的發達，使得紙的種類越來越多，文人對紙的要求也越來越高。米芾所謂的「晉紙」是在兩晉時代，在江南所造的紙，那個時代的江南造紙多用會稽一帶所生產的竹子作為紙漿原料，品質極高，而宋代越州生產的竹紙，經過不斷的捶打，讓紙的質地光滑，而品質直可與古代的晉紙相提並論，所以米芾說「晉紙『式』」「式」是樣式的意思，也就是說越州的紙有在品質上已晉紙的水準了。信中後半則是提到米芾家中的事情。米芾在年過五十歲後，遭逢到前所未有的家庭變故，先是小女兒於1100年過世，接著更沈重的打擊則是幼子米友知於1103年的早卒，〈晉紙帖〉就提到這段遭遇。 |

|
此晉紙式也。可為之越竹千杵裁出，陶竹乃復不可杵，只如此者乃佳耳。老來失第三兒，遂獨出入不得，孤懷寥落頓衰颯，氣血非昔。大兒三十歲，治家能幹且慰。目前書畫自怡外，無所慕。 芾頓首 二曾常見之，甚安。 |

Inside Story The Jing paper Mi Fu mentioned here was the paper made in Chiangnan in Jing Dynasty. During that period bamboos from Kuaichi were used for making paper and the quality of paper was excellent. The techniques of making paper in Sung Dynasty was very advanced, They constantly beat the bamboo paper to make it smooth thus the quality was almost as good as the ancient Jing paper. On the second part of the letter, Mi Fu talked about his family. He encountered huge change in life after he was over 50 years old. First his youngest daughter passed away, next his young son passed away which was unbearable tor him.
