苦芛賦 Knowledge of the better bamboo

黃庭堅個人喜歡吃苦筍,因此為了苦筍而有了這一篇遊戲之作。內容說苦筍雖然苦,但是還是有它好吃的地方,而且還把苦筍比喻為向皇帝勸諫的忠言、能夠治理國家的人材。是開胃的菜,是菜餚中的佳品,雖然四川地區的人說苦筍不可以吃,吃了引發身上的原本潛在的疾病,但是黃庭堅還是照吃不誤,文末則引李白的詩來說明吃苦筍的趣味,只有懂得的人才能了解,更不必向不懂的去白費脣舌。
【釋文】
酷嗜苦筍,諫者至十人,戲作〈苦筍賦〉,其詞曰:口道苦筍,冠冕兩川。甘脆愜當,小苦而及,成味溫潤,稹密多口,而不疾人。蓋苦而有味,如忠諫之可活國多而不害,如舉士而皆得賢。是其鍾江山之秀氣,故能深雨露而避風煙。食肴以之開導,酒客為之流涎。彼桂斑之與夢汞:又安得與之同年。蜀人曰:苦筍不可食,食之動痼疾,使人萎而瘠。予亦未嘗與之下。蓋上士不談而喻中士進則若信,退則眩焉下士信耳而不信目,其頑不可鐫。李太白曰:但得醉中趣,勿為醒者傳。

Inside Story

Huang Tingchien liked bitter bamboos and he wrote this article to joke about himself. He knew that bitter bamboo was very bitter, but there was something delicious about the food. He implied that those who remonstrated to the emperor and recommended descent officers to manage administration were just like bitter bamboo. Bitter bamboo was a good appetizer and a delicacy. Although Suchuan people do not eat bitter bamboo, they believed bitter bamboo triggered out hidden illness inside human body. Huang Tingchien ignored and kept eating bitter bamboo. In the end of the writing, he applied Li Pai’s poem to describe the fun of eating bitter bamboo. Saying that it was merely enjoyed by those who understood, and there was no need explaining to those who did not.
